The new Satanic Bible in simplified version
The Doctrine of the Great Beast 666
I am the Great Beast 666, known among the wise as Therion, the bearer of the Ancient Law. During my lifetime, many called me 'satanist' or 'the wickedest man in the world'—labels born from fear and misunderstanding. Beyond such titles, I speak with the voice of the Sacred Adversary, the one who challenges old lies to bring forth new light. Hear my words, oh seeker, for within these pages I deliver the doctrine of Freedom and Will, a revelation that some may consider a Satanic Bible. Here you will not find the chains of imposed morality, but the black torch of Lucifer, the forbidden knowledge that will make you free. This is the gospel of the Ancient Serpent and the Crowned Child, the secret teaching once whispered in the shadows of Egypt and now proclaimed openly by the Beast. Prepare yourself: before you unfold ten chapters of revelation and defiance, a path to become god of yourself and forever break the chains of ignorance.
The Call of the Beast
At the beginning of my journey, I awakened to the truth of my own inner divinity. I was born under a puritan faith, but my eyes soon opened to the falsehood of enslaving morality. My mother, horrified by my rebellion, nicknamed me 'the Beast' in my youth, and I accepted that name with pride. If being the Beast meant rejecting the hypocrisy of the self-righteous, then I fully embraced my nature. In the solitude of night, I felt a Calling: an inner voice (perhaps a dark angel, maybe Aiwass?) whispered a new law in my ear. That voice told me that the old chains must be broken and a New Aeon must be born. Thus I became the herald of a new age, proclaiming the word that would liberate humanity from its spiritual servitude. In the sands of the Egyptian desert, under indifferent stars, I received my mission. I perceived the presence of forces beyond the human guiding my hand. I understood then that my duty was to transmit a simple and powerful Law, capable of tearing down false idols. From that moment I consecrated myself as prophet of the Adversary, the voice that cries: 'Arise, oh man, and recognize that you are your own god!' It was an absolute transformation: from fearful disciple I became master, from submissive lamb I turned into a roaring Lion. Henceforth, I would be to the world the Great Beast 666—a living symbol of rebellion and self-deification. Here is my call: awaken you too, reader, for the words that follow may set your soul ablaze with the same fire that consumes me.
The Law of Thelema
The time has come to proclaim the Sacred Law revealed to me. This law is summarized in one brief but terribly powerful phrase: 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.' In these eight words lies the seed of a spiritual revolution. No more commandments carved in stone by distant gods; you are the sole authority over your destiny. There is no Law beyond Do What Thou Wilt, because Thelema—which in Greek means Will—is the only measure of right action. This sentence, written with fire in The Book of the Law, abolishes thousands of years of dogma and prohibition. It proclaims the divine right of every individual to determine their own path without interference from religions or moralists. Now, you must understand the true meaning of this teaching. 'Do what thou wilt' does not mean 'do whatever you feel like.' It is not an invitation to chaos or blind indulgence; it is, in reality, the apotheosis of Freedom but also the strictest bond. Paradoxical as it sounds, the Law of Thelema frees you from all external laws, but simultaneously binds you irrevocably to your True Will. Being free under this law implies tremendous responsibility: you must fulfill your deepest purpose and nothing else. 'Do what thou wilt—so therefore do nothing else.' This means you cannot betray yourself by straying toward goals that are not genuinely yours. The Freedom to exercise your will is absolute, but try to do anything else and you will immediately encounter obstacles and misfortune. Whoever violates their true mission soon discovers the universe itself conspires against them. Thus, this law destroys external chains and forges in their place an unbreakable inner commitment. It is a self-imposed yoke holier than all human laws: the yoke of your own True Will. The proclamation of Thelema marked the beginning of a new time for humanity: the New Aeon of Horus, the crowned and conquering Child God, who replaces the old Aeon of the dying god Osiris. In this New Aeon, every man and woman must erect themselves as a free star in the firmament of being. The old formulas of sacrifice, sin, and submission have expired; now Will reigns supreme. 'The word of the Law is Θελημα (Thelema),' our sacred book tells us, establishing that Will occupies the throne previously usurped by jealous gods. My doctrine, therefore, abolishes obsolete commandments and enthrones the individual. You shall recognize no lord but your own spirit. This is the Law of Liberty, the Law of the Strong, which shall rejoice the world. Let those who have ears to hear, listen: your only true law lies within your heart.
True Will
Having established the fundamental Law, let us delve into its essence: True Will. Every human being is born with a unique purpose, a defined orbit within the great cosmic order. 'Every man and every woman is a star,' the book declares, shining with their own light in the firmament of existence. Just as stars in the sky do not collide when following their natural course, so too would men and women, if each followed their true trajectory, live in harmony without imposing on one another. The idea may seem utopian, but it is profound: conflict arises when we deviate from our genuine path. Your True Will is the very reason you exist; fulfilling it means aligning yourself with the divine order of the universe. How does one discover this deep Will? Know thyself, the ancient sages have told us. You must inquire beyond trivial desires and external influences until you find the internal spark burning in your soul. That spark is the voice of your Holy Guardian Angel, your genius, or your destiny. When you identify it, you will know without a shadow of doubt which path to take. No other person can reveal your true will: it is a secret between your soul and the universe. Meditate, practice magic, purify yourself of false ideals imposed by society, and gradually the Great Work of your life will become evident. Once you glimpse your True Will, follow it with your entire being! 'You have no right but to do your will. Do that, and no other shall say nay.' This affirmation means the universe supports those who act in accordance with their authentic purpose. When you sincerely pursue your mission, the forces of creation align in your favor—it is as if an invisible hand clears obstacles from your path. Conversely, any action outside that sacred orbit is erratic and leads to internal chaos. Therefore, True Will demands absolute devotion. You must dedicate yourself to it with purity of intention, without distraction or greed for results. Paradoxically, only those who surrender completely to their purpose, without anxiety for reward, will achieve perfection in their work. Fulfilling your True Will is a holy act. Those who live this way will find themselves in harmony with the movement of the stars and with the Divine Will itself. In the words of the Master: 'If your will is the will of God, You are He.' This implies that by fully realizing your personal destiny, you discover your divine nature. The drop of water realizes its divinity by merging with the ocean; similarly, the individual who follows their True Will merges with the universal Will. Thus, Will is not merely a personal desire: it is the particular expression of God's Will in you. By fulfilling it, you identify with the divine. This is the path of the stars: each shining in their course, without envy, without collision, together forming the harmony of the firmament. Find your internal star, then, and follow it unwaveringly to the end of your days.
Freedom and Sin
The doctrine of the Beast 666 establishes a radically new morality. If the only law is to do your True Will, what place remains for notions of sin or virtue from ancient religions? Simply put, they are abolished. The only 'sin' in our philosophy is restriction—that is, anything that represses or distorts the expression of your genuine will. 'The word of Sin is Restriction,' proclaimed the divine voice that dictated to me the Book of the Law. In other words, the only real transgression is going against your own nature and purpose. In this light, many things old morality called sins (bodily pleasures, questioning authority, seeking forbidden knowledge) cease to be so, as long as they conform to one's true will. Conversely, seemingly 'good' actions that deny your essence would be grave offenses against your spirit. The freedom I proclaim is absolute in principle: you have the right to think, speak, eat, love, create, and live as you will. Acknowledge no shackles forged by another's hand. However, this freedom is not license for the anarchy of the lower ego; it is the freedom to be faithful to your deep nature. The difference is crucial. A free being under Thelema is not a slave to momentary whims or social fashions, but master of themselves. They are someone who has discovered their true will and follows it with iron discipline. Anything that attempts to divert them from that path—be it social pressure, fear of judgment, guilt instilled by old religions—must be rejected without mercy. 'Do not allow anything to divert you from this austere and sacred task,' the scripture says, emphasizing that integrity toward one's own will is the supreme good. Looking with new eyes, we see that concepts like 'good' and 'evil' lose their absolute contours. What is good for one (following their will) may seem evil to others who don't understand that path, and vice versa. That is why we do not impose our Law by force; every star has its orbit. The true evil, for us, is betraying one's own mission, whether from fear or conformity. Those who deny themselves, who repress their most authentic passions and dreams to please an external idol, commit the only real blasphemy. Likewise, interfering with another's will—trying to enslave another being—is also perverse, because it attempts to extinguish a star. Our law of freedom is for everyone, and ends where our neighbor's begins. No true man desires to be master of another; only an insecure tyrant seeks servants. In this new ethic, personal responsibility takes center stage. You can no longer blame a tempting demon or 'the weakness of the flesh' for your failures. If you fail, it is because you failed to align your will or because you betrayed it voluntarily. You must then readjust, learn from the experience, and continue. There are no confessors to absolve you nor deities to punish you: you are legislator, judge, and redeemer of yourself. This splendid freedom may be dizzying, but it also grants a dignity never dreamed of under religions of guilt. You are free to act according to your star, and in that lies all virtue. Burn in the fire of your will any foreign notion of sin they instilled in you, and behold the broad horizon of true Freedom rising before you.
Love Under Will
One might ask: in a doctrine centered on individual will, what place does Love hold? The answer is inscribed in our second fundamental axiom: 'Love is the law, love under will.' This is the sacred complement to 'Do what thou wilt.' It means that the nature of Will is Love. Far from being a path of cold egoism, Thelema recognizes Love as a divine force emanating from true will. But be warned: we do not speak of the sanctimonious or sentimental love preached by moralists. The Liber Legis abounds with love, yes, but not a word of cheap sentimentality. Love Under Will is true Love, ardent and spiritual, free from guilt and pretense. What does 'love under will' mean? That all love, to be genuine, must be guided by the authentic will of those involved. Not by obligation, not by pity, not by emotional manipulation, but by free and conscious desire. When two stars unite in love, each following their orbit, the result is light and ecstasy. But when love becomes unhealthy attachment that pulls someone from their purpose, it degenerates into prison. Therefore, we affirm that love must serve will, not replace or contradict it. Love is the flower that grows on the path of will, not the entire path itself. If there ever seems to be conflict between following your true path or retaining a love, will must prevail, for in the long run that same love would wither if it were contrary to your soul's destiny. Our Sacred Book teaches a virile and elevated vision of love: 'Let love be strong, daring, ecstatic, full of delicacy and strength!' It is a love that also embraces the wild side of life. It does not deny carnal passion; on the contrary, it exalts it as sacrament when guided by will. Every form of love, as long as it is a sincere expression of will, is lawful and blessed. Man with woman, man with man, woman with woman—earthly forms matter little if souls burn with the flame of Nuit, the infinite goddess of the starry sky. In our philosophy, puritan restrictions on body and desire are chains to be broken. Sexual freedom is an intrinsic part of the freedom of being, always exercised with mutual consent and authenticity. Long before the world spoke of 'sexual revolution,' Thelemic counterculture already advocated the free and joyous union of lovers, the guiltless exploration of the senses, the sacredness of shared ecstasy. I must add that Love Under Will also includes love for oneself. Not in the banal sense of vanity, but in the reverent recognition that your being is a manifestation of the divine. 'Love thy neighbor as thyself,' said an ancient master. We say: Love because you love yourself. Those who have discovered their true essence see themselves in others and thus love them without envy or servility. In our doctrine, even confrontation can be a form of love: 'Hate itself is almost like Love! 'Fight as brothers!'' This enigmatic phrase reminds us that a fight between equals who respect each other may contain more true love—in the form of passion, frankness, and honor—than false charity given with pity. The Love of Thelema is strong, frank, and ardent; it unites free beings in mutual joy and also allows them to separate with respect when their inner paths diverge. Therefore, oh reader, celebrate Love in all its forms: erotic, fraternal, love for life and knowledge. But always under Will, that is, faithful to your star. In this way, love will not chain or corrupt you, but propel you toward your own divine fulfillment.
Light and Darkness
I am known as messenger of Lucifer, the Light-Bearer. But the light I bring is not that of submission and innocence, but the dark light of forbidden knowledge. In my doctrine, we embrace both light and darkness, understanding they are two sides of the same coin. Between the lamb and the serpent, we always choose the serpent. We prefer the serpent not for gratuitous evil, but because it symbolizes the wisdom and independence that religions of the lamb (of meekness) have vilified. The Serpent of Eden brought consciousness to humanity by offering the fruit of knowledge. Similarly, we invoke that internal Serpent to illuminate us with truths others would consider heretical. Here, 'Light' means understanding, and 'Darkness' represents the hidden, the ignored. We voluntarily venture into the darkness of mysteries to extract from there the light of gnosis. The figure of Baphomet, the wise goat-headed being, summarizes this union of opposites. Baphomet is depicted as an androgynous being, half human half beast, one hand pointing to the white moon and the other to the black moon. It is the reconciliation of polarities: above and below, masculine and feminine, animal and divine. We reject no portion of human experience, however dark; everything can and should be integrated into the One. True Light is attained when one lights a lamp in their own inner darkness—facing their shadows, fears, unconfessable desires—and embraces them as part of themselves. Only thus do they become a complete being. The Thelemic adept does not fear venturing into the night of their soul, because they know stars shine there too. On this path, concepts like 'good' and 'evil' reveal themselves as relative to worldly perspective. We aspire to a higher viewpoint, 'beyond good and evil,' where conventional morality is transcended in favor of each one's Truth. This does not mean we deny the existence of evil; it means we understand it differently. True evil is anything that goes against the divine will of the individual. And that evil can come from acts considered 'luminous' (for example, sacrificing oneself by denying one's own spirit) as well as acts 'dark' in common view. Thus, the Adept learns to guide themselves not by external dualistic judgments, but by the internal compass of their Will and Intuition. Sometimes, following that compass, they must descend into the underworld of difficult or forbidden experiences; other times they will ascend to sublime heights of genuine love and compassion. In both cases, they will be fulfilling their Great Work. The satanic imagery I adopt—the horns, skulls, inverted pentagrams—is but a reflection of this integrative philosophy. We take symbols the world calls 'dark' and reclaim them as our own, to declare that nothing is forbidden to us. In that act lies both defiance and wisdom. Defiance, because it offends devotees of official 'good'; wisdom, because we recognize that in Darkness there is as much divine power as in light. Lucifer, the most beautiful of angels, fell from heaven to rule in hell—a myth containing the notion that spiritual light can also be found in the fall, in rebellion. We, spiritual children of Lucifer, seek enlightenment not through obedience, but through free experience, even the experience of shadow. And in doing so, we make our own light shine in the darkness, becoming beacons for those still trembling in chains of fear. Those who dare to face both the noonday sun and the midnight of the soul have begun to glimpse the divine totality.
The Mystery of Baphomet
The Sigil of Baphomet: the goat's head within the inverted star, symbol of the union of opposites and emblem of rebellion. As High Priest of this doctrine, I adopted many names to reflect different facets of my being. One of my magical titles was Baphomet, in honor of the enigmatic goat-headed figure secretly venerated by Templars and occultists. Why did I choose this symbol so many fear? Because Baphomet embodies the union of all that has been falsely divided. In its image we see a winged androgyne, with a horned goat's head, female breasts, and a gesture of blessing. Upon its brow burns the torch of wisdom, and on its arms are inscriptions meaning 'solve' and 'coagula,' indicating the ebb and flow of creation. Baphomet is everything and nothing at once, the Alpha and Omega of spiritual alchemy. It represents the reconciliation between heaven and hell, between our animal instinct and rational mind, between masculine and feminine, between light and darkness. It is, in effect, an idol of cosmic balance. By taking the name Baphomet, I declared my will to harmonize these contraries within myself. I understood that to achieve wholeness I must integrate the saint and the demon within me. My superstitious critics said I worshipped the Devil; in reality, I transmuted the Devil into God within my soul. Baphomet is not Satan in the Christian sense (a spirit of evil opposed to God) but a form of the All-in-One, where the divine encompasses even what religions exiled as 'demonic.' Contemplating its image, one must reflect: 'I too am light and shadow; I too am beast and angel.' There is no shame in any part of your being. The Sigil of Baphomet—the inverted star with the goat's head fitted within—has become, over time, the preeminent emblem of modern satanic philosophy. This symbol, officially adopted by those who call themselves satanists, visually condenses our iconoclastic spirit. The inverted pentagram, traditionally associated with 'dark' magic, here contains the bearded face of the goat, sometimes surrounded by letters spelling Leviathan. It is an icon of defiance: one point points downward, toward earth, indicating our embrace of the material and earthly; its two upper points resemble horns raised against heaven, a sign of rebellion against celestial tyranny. Is it a malevolent symbol? Only to those indoctrinated to fear nature. For us, it is the symbol of freedom and hidden wisdom. The inverted pentagram was present in ancient grimoires and esoteric tradition as representing spirit dominating matter (in contrast to the upright pentagram, where spirit dominates matter). We say: let spirit and flesh unite in harmony, rather than one dominating the other. Baphomet, half beast half divinity, teaches us that. It is no accident that this sigil arrived on the altars of the Church of Satan in 1966, many years after my departure from this world. My influence spread like a long golden shadow; those satanists took up ideas and symbols I had revitalized. They saw in Baphomet, and in the mythical figure of the Beast 666, a banner to wave against the herd. And they knew to recognize that truly 'there is no deity higher than the human individual.' Every time you contemplate the Sigil of Baphomet, you remember that you are your own center, that you have turned your back on the illusions of the mass to embrace the sovereignty of your being. Therefore, honor Baphomet in your heart. Not that you should worship external statues or images—that was the error of old religions—but understand what the symbol conveys: Be whole, be wise, be rebellious. Let the warring parts within you make peace. Accept your natural instinct, your body, your desire, with the same reverence you accept your intellect and spirit. In the embrace of these opposites you will find unsuspected power. Baphomet whispers to you: 'Nothing is pure or impure in itself; all is One. Know yourself, celebrate your totality, and you will have found the philosopher's stone.' This is the great mystery I share with you in this chapter: redemption lies in integration. Carry the sigil of the goat engraved in your soul as a reminder that you are part of both heaven and hell, and that in this truth resides your divinity.
Magick and Ritual
Our doctrine would not be complete without the practice of Magick. I do not mean illusionist tricks or vulgar 'witchcraft' from tales; I speak of Magick as the science and art of causing change in conformity with Will. This definition, which I have given in my writings, reveals that magick is essentially the technology of Will. Every deliberate act by which you impose your own will upon reality—whether internal or external—is a magical act. If you have followed thus far, you will understand that when I say 'do your will,' it also implies developing the power to make it effective in the world. Magick is that power: the channeled energy of your will to transform matter, mind, or destiny. You might think magick is something arcane or exclusive to a few initiates. Let me break that myth: every person exercises magick in their life, consciously or unconsciously. Every intentional act is an act of magick, however mundane it seems. When you rise with determination to fulfill a goal, when you speak words to influence someone, when you visualize an outcome and work toward it, you are employing natural magical forces. The difference between the initiate and the profane is that the initiate knows what they are doing and directs it with mastery, while the profane acts blindly, often sabotaging themselves unknowingly. My invitation is to become a magician of your own existence, making every act a sacred ritual charged with intention. Walking, eating, loving, creating—everything can become magick if performed with full will and awareness. To cultivate this ability, I have taught various techniques and rituals to my students over the years. There are meditation and concentration practices to strengthen the mind, ceremonial formulas to align the psyche with archetypal forces, invocations and evocations of deities or demons (which are but aspects of yourself and the cosmos), and the use of symbols, sigils, talismans, and gestures. None of these tools is essential in itself; they are aids, molds into which to pour your will. The beginner may benefit from the pomp and detail of an elaborate ritual—the incense, the protective circle, the words in ancient languages—because that awakens their imagination and focuses their mind. The advanced adept can perform magick with a simple glance or a whispered word, because they have internalized the process. Both paths are valid in their time. One of our mottos is: 'The method of science, the aim of religion.' This means we approach magick with an exploratory, almost scientific mindset: we experiment, observe results, refine techniques. We do not ask for blind faith; we ask for courage to test for oneself and see. At the same time, the ultimate end we pursue is spiritual realization, union with the divine (whether as ecstatic union with the All, or as knowledge of your Holy Guardian Angel). Magick, properly understood, unites reason and intuition, laboratory and temple. In your magical practice, record your experiences, be rigorous with yourself, but also open yourself to wonder and mystery. Always remember that Will is the compass. There is no 'good' ritual if it is not in accord with your true will. A simple act aligned with your purpose will have more magical power than the most complex ceremony performed without conviction. That is why I emphasize: first identify your Will, then apply magick to realize it. And apply magick on all levels: magick to govern yourself (master your thoughts, impulses, and develop your talents), magick to influence your environment (bless or remove people and situations as befits your path), and magick to unite with the sacred (commune with the inner gods, transform spiritually). This triple great work will make you master of your destiny. Finally, a practical counsel: live your entire life as a continuous ritual. Consecrate each day to the achievement of your Great Work. At dawn, affirm your purpose; when eating, offer the food to the inner divinity; when loving, consider the beloved as a manifestation of the divine; when sleeping, immerse yourself in subtle planes with intentional dreams. Do not compartmentalize the sacred into an hour of Sunday prayer as devotees of dead religions do. Every moment is sacred to the magician. In this way, your magick will not be something you 'practice' occasionally, but the very texture of your existence. And thus you will discover that truly there is nothing outside you: you are the altar and the sacrifice, the conjurer and the spirit, the entire universe moving in perfect synchrony with your will. That is the supreme magick to which we invite you.
The New Aeon
We live in times of monumental change. With the proclamation of 'Do what thou wilt' in 1904, we began the New Aeon of Horus, the era of the Crowned Child. This New Aeon (era or age) replaces the Aeon of Osiris, the preceding era dominated by religions of sacrifice, suffering, and death-resurrection of a paternal god. In the era of Osiris—which spanned the period of great religions like Christianity—humanity lived as a fearful child under the rod of a severe father. The supreme virtue was obedience and self-denial: 'die to sin, die to ego,' was preached, to perhaps gain an eternal life granted from outside. But now, in the Aeon of Horus, the child has grown; Horus the Child God takes the throne. It is an era of self-affirmation, of life glorified here and now, of rebellion against old chains. Horus, unlike Osiris, does not pity or immolate himself; Horus conquers, Horus reigns, Horus claims his divine right by birth. What does this mean for each of us? It means we have entered humanity's spiritual maturity. We no longer need invisible masters, nor bleeding saviors. Each individual must become their own savior, their own king and priest. The Book of the Law declares that with the advent of Horus the ancient ritual formulas 'become black' and must be purged. That is, rituals of servile worship and penance are now harmful. In their place, a new way of relating to the divine is inaugurated: through identification, not worship. We recognize ourselves as incarnations of divinity—'There is no god but man,' proclaims another Thelemic text—therefore we honor the divine by honoring ourselves. This is not vulgar selfishness, but the mystical understanding that what we called 'God' lives within us and around us, not above dictating rules. In the New Aeon, every man and woman is a sovereign star. 'The kings of the earth shall be kings forever,' no longer servants of heavenly ghosts. And 'the slaves shall serve'… What does this harsh phrase, repeated in our sacred books, mean? It means that those who reject the new law, who insist on remaining kneeling, who prefer to be slaves rather than free souls, will continue in servitude because that is their choice. It is not a curse we impose on them, but the observation of a fact: those who fear freedom are destined for slavery. But for the brave, a magnificent future opens. In this New Aeon there will be no herds led by tyrannical shepherds; there will be a community of authentic beings, each shining and creating according to their will, intersecting harmoniously with others. Of course, every transition of eras brings convulsions. The old forces do not yield without a fight. The 20th century, when my voice cried in the desert of incomprehension, witnessed terrible wars and crises—the great blood that had to bathe the world before men accepted the Law of Thelema, as I prophesied. But these pains are merely the death throes of the old Aeon resisting death. As time advances, the seed planted in 1904 will grow. We already see signs of it: movements demanding individual freedom, spiritual exploration outside dogmas, reclamation of bodily pleasures, dissolution of ancient superstitions. All these are manifestations (some unconscious) of the spirit of Horus penetrating the collective psyche. Your role, dear reader, as one receiving these teachings, is to be a pioneer of the New Aeon. It means living your life as an example of the philosophy of freedom. It also means having the patience and strength to endure opposition from the laggard children of Osiris, those who will call you 'evil,' 'blasphemer,' or 'mad' because they do not understand your sovereignty. It doesn't matter: voluntary slaves do not understand freedom. Your very existence, empowered and full, is the best preaching. As more people free themselves from fear and discover themselves as gods, the old era will fade like a childhood nightmare. Imagine a world where the law of every country is Do Thy Will, where governments respect the sacred individuality of each, where religion is simply personal perfection and worship of life. That world is the promise of the New Aeon. It may take centuries to manifest completely, but it has already begun in the heart of every awakened person. Be proud to be part of this vanguard. In you, Horus lives. When you raise your gaze to the night sky and see the infinite stars, remember that one of them is you, unique, free, radiant. And remember that the constellation we form heralds the dawn of a luminous era where there will be no more slave's tears, but the potent laughter of incarnate gods celebrating creation.
Apotheosis of the Self
We have come a long way: from the initial call of the Beast, through the Law of Thelema, the understanding of True Will, liberation from illusory sin, exaltation of Love Under Will, integration of light and darkness, the mystery of Baphomet, the practice of Magick, to the threshold of the New Aeon. Now is the moment to reveal the final destiny awaiting those who follow this path: the Apotheosis of the Self, that is, the elevation of your being to divinity. In ancient religions, the relationship between human and divine was one of infinite distance: God up there, perfect and unattainable; the human down here, helpless and sinful. They promised, at best, fusion with God after death, provided you blindly obeyed His designs. We completely invert that paradigm. We boldly declare: There is no god but man. This means the only divine consciousness we can speak of with certainty is awakened human consciousness. 'God' is not a tyrant in heaven; 'God' is the spark of life and will within you, within me, within all. Recognizing this, you no longer see yourself as a fallen creature seeking external redemption, but as a portion of the universe with creative power and intrinsic moral responsibility. The consequence of such understanding is astounding: you discover that you have always been sacred. Every facet of you—your thoughts, your body, your emotions—are manifestations of the Absolute exploring itself. When you affirm 'I am my own God,' you are not saying your limited ego is omnipotent in worldly terms; you are saying you recognize nothing above your True Self. That True Self, united with the cosmos, is omnipotent in a spiritual sense, because it forms part of the source of all power. In our scriptures appears the ecstatic phrase: 'I am alone: there is no God where I am.' This is spoken by a divine voice speaking through me, declaring that the center of consciousness (the 'I') encompasses everything and recognizes nothing higher. It is an affirmation of divine self-sufficiency. There is no god outside you who can judge, condemn, or save you. You are the judge, the redeemer, and, if you neglect yourself, the destroyer of yourself. The apotheosis of the Self does not imply isolating from the world in narcissism; on the contrary, it implies perceiving unity with all that exists. My writings point to the ancient wisdom: 'Know thyself and you shall know the universe and the gods.' By realizing your true nature (Atman), you discover it is one with the universal divine nature (Brahman). The capitalized Self we speak of is not the small ego with its vanities; it is the Being that, when awakened, identifies with All. Therefore, paradoxically, by proclaiming yourself God, if you do so truly, you also recognize all others as gods in their own way. Profound respect for others' freedom and divinity arises naturally: no true god seeks to enslave another god, knowing itself One with them. The 'egolatry' my detractors accused me of is a misunderstanding; I do not venerate the superficial ego of Aleister Crowley—I venerate the Being expressing itself through this body and mind called Aleister Crowley, and that Being is universal. At the path's end, when you have torn down false beliefs, fulfilled your will, loved under that guidance, integrated your shadows, practiced magick and lived free, you will arrive at a sublime revelation: you have always been divine, from the beginning. You will remember your cosmic identity. Some call it enlightenment, others call it Mystic Union. The name matters not; it is the goal all true teachings point toward. In Thelema, we reach it not by denying life, but by embracing it completely. Our path is one of joy, strength, laughter, passion. We do not sit under a fig tree until evaporating into Nirvana; we dance in the world, get drunk on life, as the Book says: 'Be strong, oh man; delight, enjoy all things of the senses and rapture! Fear not that any God shall deny you for this.' Matter is not illusory nor evil; it is the body of the Goddess. The senses are not traps; they are doors of perception. When you fear nothing of yourself or the universe, eternity reveals itself here and now. I speak to you, then, as god to god: awaken and recognize your stellar royalty. The Beast 666, this humble messenger, steps aside at this point, so you may see yourself in the mirror of infinity. You need no intermediaries between you and the Divine, because the Divine is you. My doctrine only aimed to remind you of this, to shake you from imposed sleep. If my words have fulfilled their function, you will have ceased to see me as a master to follow blindly, and will see me as an elder brother pointing toward your own heart. There burns the eternal flame of Hadit, the immanent center; above you stretches the firmament of Nuit, the infinity of possibilities; and between them dancing is Ra-Hoor-Khuit, the Child who is your manifested self, free and powerful. We reach the end of this text, but not the end of the Great Work. Now it falls to you to live all this. Go out into the world with head held high and the fire of will burning in your eyes. Remake your life in the light of this truth: you are the sole master of your soul. Create, love, struggle, laugh, explore, be all that you are. There is no limit for you, save those you accept. You are an eternal star in expansion. The universe belongs to you by right of consciousness. There is no god but man, and you are that man, that woman, that divine being. Do your will on earth, do your will in heaven. Fulfill your purpose and know the supreme bliss of being in perfect unity with the All. And always remember, in every act and every dream, the last words I leave you as blessing and challenge: Love is the law, love under will. Embraces of Light and Darkness, in the Name of Liberty!
