Sophie: hey I need to tell you something about Nico

Martha: what's wrong?

Sophie: he's been drawing the same thing for two weeks, always a figure in the corner of his room

Martha: kids draw weird stuff, don't overthink it

Sophie: I asked him who it was, he said the man in the corner, that he talks to him when everyone's asleep

Martha: what does he tell him?

Sophie: family stuff, I swear I was speechless. He said grandpa's name, he spelled it out for me

Martha: grandpa died when Nico was five months old

Sophie: I know, that's what I said, and he answered: I know mom, that's why he tells me

Sophie: look I'm sending you today's drawing

Sophie: the figure is always the same, tall, no face, in the right corner

Sophie: and the right corner of his room is where the boarded-up window is, the one that doesn't open

Martha: Sophie, the divorce thing. Does Nico know anything?

Sophie: nothing, we've been really careful about it, why?

Martha: because this morning he called me and asked if daddy was coming back, those exact words

Sophie: no one told him that

Martha: I know, he said the man in the corner told him

Martha: have you talked to his father about this?

Sophie: no... I haven't heard from him
