Sophia: Oh my god, this place is MASSIVE
Sophia: Six floors of pure Soviet architecture
Sophia: Built in 1953 according to the plaque by the entrance
Sophia: The Soviets built things to last
Sophia: The lobby is stunning
Sophia: Hammer-and-sickle mosaics on the floor
Sophia: In the back there's this huge mural, heroic workers marching into the future
Sophia: Found the guest ledgers at the front desk
Sophia: They're in Russian, but I can make out the dates
Sophia: Last entry is from 1991
Sophia: Right when the Soviet Union fell
Sophia: The hotel died along with the regime that built it
Sophia: Headed up to the third floor to set up camp
Sophia: Picked room 312
Sophia: It's roomy, got an iron bed frame that's still holding up
Sophia: And best part: the window overlooks an endless forest
Sophia: Set up my recording gear and my sleeping bag
Sophia: Got enough food for eight days and plenty of spare batteries
Sophia: The challenge is to spend seven days here alone
